Friends have asked me about me reactions. I will not talk
about how we got into it. We are in. Now what.
Some authorities want to avoid a land war. They claim that
Saddam Hussein needs thousands of trucks to supply his
forces. So bomb the highways. Just keep harassing him.
If we attack on land we may be playing his game.
We should have a long view. There will be a frightful oil
shortage sooner or later. In another article I suggested
that we say to the Arab Countries. We have been wasting
oil and other resources. We have not protected our farm
lands.
There is a world food shortage now and getting worse.
If both of us conserve oil, the evil day of oil depletion may
be delayed.
Oil is not renewable. The products of farms & forests and
the waters of rivers, lakes and the sea are renewable and
could be increased rather than being depleted as is presently
happening.
Our leaders and the various voices that dominate television
might talk more about how our actions can affect the lifetime
of a baby born today. Say about 7O years.
In that time, at present rates, the oil will be scarce and
very expensive. World hunger will increase. The world
population may keep exploding. There could be a billion
people starving. Some form of chaos could result.
What is alarming are not the problems but the lack of long
term planning. It would mean sacrificing short term
gains for long term benefits.
Our people have not been offered a comprehensive plan for
themselves and their children's children. The talk I hear
is about money. How to get it and keep it? That's a
cheap plan. Little long term value.
Children are urged to go to college and so avoid doing any
menial work. But much of the work of survival and
preserving the future means many people will need to do a lot
of such work.
I have written a number of articles about what might be done.
I hope to get them together as a book.
